Do What?

Many people are unsure what a duvet is, figuring it is just another word for “comforter.” In fact, a duvet is the cloth cover that houses a comforter, gives it personality. Think of it as your comforter’s “outfit” – which can change depending on the mood it’s in!

There are many advantages to using a duvet with your comforter. The first is obvious – it looks better! There are so many duvet designs and styles, you would be hard-pressed not to find at least one that was right for your room. In fact, your main problem might be narrowing down the ones you like!

Secondly, a duvet helps protect your delicate down comforter … shielding it from the elements and keeping body oils, dirt and other nasties away. They are easy to get on and off, and usually have simple closures such as zippers, buttons, or Velcro. A duvet is a lot simpler to wash than a comforter and easier on your machine … so you can wash and change your duvet as often as you like, without any wear and tear on your comforter.

Finally, a duvet can be quite economical – allowing you to change the look of your bedroom whenever you like. Prices generally range from $30-150. What easier way to redecorate? You’d be amazed at the difference it can make to change the color and pattern on your bed. And it literally takes just a few seconds. A lot cheaper than buying a bunch of different bedding sets!

Whichever duvet you choose, make sure it fits your comforter. Generally, look for one that is an inch or two bigger than your comforter. There are standard duvet sizes that match bed sizes … you will want to be sure the comforter fits snugly but without strain. Also take into account the fabric you pick. Do you want something embroidered? Shiny? Contemporary? Classic?

There are lots of sites online where you can check out different designs and order something that appeals to you. You could also go to a department store and browse around until you find that perfect “dress” for your bed. Whatever you end up choosing, have fun!
